What to buy in Japan

The mechanisms at work in Japan are mostly three: proximity to production, the exchange rate, and the depth of the secondhand market. Which gives a rule you can apply without a list — buy things Japan makes, and things Japanese people have let go of.

The corollary matters just as much. Imported brands are not cheap here. Duty, importer margin and consumption tax stack on top of the home-market price, which typically puts foreign apparel, bags and shoes 1.3–2× above what you would pay in the brand's own country. Every category below is a domestic-goods category for that reason.

One timing note for 2026: Japan's tax-free scheme is scheduled to change from a point-of-sale exemption to a departure refund on 1 November 2026. If you are travelling near or after that date, read the tax-free guide before you plan your last day.
