The rule for Southeast Asia is simple and it is not about souvenirs. Anything where skilled labour is most of the price collapses in cost; anything that is a manufactured object on a shelf does not. Mass-market goods in a Bangkok mall are priced much like mass-market goods anywhere. A suit cut and sewn for you, or a course of dental work, is a different category of purchase entirely.
That framing also sets the risk. When you buy labour rather than an object, you are buying the judgement and skill of a specific person, and you have limited ability to verify it and no ability to return afterwards.
