What to buy in Thailand and Vietnam

Mechanisms at workDistance from the factory

The rule for Southeast Asia is simple and it is not about souvenirs. Anything where skilled labour is most of the price collapses in cost; anything that is a manufactured object on a shelf does not. Mass-market goods in a Bangkok mall are priced much like mass-market goods anywhere. A suit cut and sewn for you, or a course of dental work, is a different category of purchase entirely.

That framing also sets the risk. When you buy labour rather than an object, you are buying the judgement and skill of a specific person, and you have limited ability to verify it and no ability to return afterwards. Every recommendation below is conditional on doing that verification before you travel — not after you land.

Dental work (implants, cosmetic) ×3–5

Estimate
Why it is cheaper
Labour and facility costs are a fraction of those in Japan or the US, while materials are the same international brands. Leading clinics in Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City run high procedure volumes with internationally trained staff.
Where to buy
Established international clinics with published credentials, not walk-in operations.
Before you buy
Vet the clinic and the individual practitioner in advance. Multi-visit treatment needs schedule slack, and complications after you fly home are yours to solve locally at full price.

Bespoke suits and shirts ×3–6

Estimate
Why it is cheaper
Cutting and sewing labour is the majority of a bespoke garment's cost, and here it is a fraction of the Japanese equivalent. Good cloth from the same European mills is available.
Where to buy
Hoi An in Vietnam for volume and speed; established Bangkok tailors for higher-end work.
Before you buy
Allow three to four days minimum including at least one fitting. A one-day suit is a one-day suit — the fit will show it.

Silk and linen goods ×2–4

Estimate
Why it is cheaper
Domestic weaving and finishing, sold without the import chain that carries them to Japan.
Where to buy
Established shops rather than market stalls, where synthetic blends are commonly sold as pure silk.
Before you buy
Burn-test claims and price alone will not tell you the fibre content. Buy where there is a shopfront to come back to.

Coffee beans (Vietnam) ×2–3

Estimate
Why it is cheaper
One of the largest producing countries in the world, buying at origin.
Where to buy
Roasters in Ho Chi Minh City and Da Lat rather than airport gift shops.
Before you buy
Roasted beans are generally fine to import; green beans and plant material often are not. Declare on arrival.

Common questions

Is dental tourism in Thailand safe?

Leading international clinics in Bangkok operate to high standards with internationally trained dentists and the same implant systems used in Japan or the US. The risk is not the standard of care at good clinics; it is provider selection and the absence of follow-up once you fly home. Verify credentials in advance, choose treatment that completes within your stay, and budget for the possibility of corrective work at full price at home.

How long does a bespoke suit take in Hoi An?

Shops advertise 24 hours, and they can deliver in 24 hours, but the fit shows it. Three to four days with at least one and preferably two fittings is the minimum for a garment worth carrying home. Book on arrival, not on your last day.
