What to buy in France

Mechanisms at workRegional brand pricingTax-free schemes and VAT refunds

France is the clearest illustration of the brand-pricing mechanism at the top of the market. A French luxury house prices its home boutiques against its home market, and Japan then adds import duty, an importer, and a positioning premium. Reclaim the VAT on departure and the gap opens further. It is not enormous — typically 1.3 to 1.6× — but on a high-ticket item that is a large absolute number.

Below the luxury tier, two categories deserve more attention than they get. French cookware (Staub, Le Creuset, De Buyer) is manufactured domestically and sold as kitchen equipment rather than as design objects. And French pharmacy skincare is a mass-market category at home and an imported specialty abroad, which is exactly the setup that produces a wide gap.

Luxury goods at home-boutique prices ×1.3–1.6

Estimate
Why it is cheaper
Home-market boutique pricing, minus the VAT refund, versus Japanese retail carrying duty, importer margin and a premium positioning.
Where to buy
Brand boutiques in Paris. Department stores handle the refund paperwork in one place, which matters if you are buying across several brands.
Before you buy
Bring your passport to the purchase, not just to the airport — the refund form must be issued at the point of sale.

Cookware (Staub, Le Creuset, De Buyer) ×1.8–2.5

Estimate
Why it is cheaper
Domestically manufactured and sold as kitchen equipment. Abroad the same pans are positioned as design objects and priced against that shelf.
Where to buy
Professional kitchen-supply shops rather than department stores; E.Dehillerin in Paris is the classic.
Before you buy
Cast iron is extremely heavy. One piece will consume most of a baggage allowance.

Pharmacy skincare (Avène, Bioderma, La Roche-Posay) ×2–3

Estimate
Why it is cheaper
A mass-market pharmacy category at home, an imported specialty abroad. French pharmacies also discount competitively, which the export channel does not.
Where to buy
Any city pharmacy; the large discount pharmacies in Paris go further on price.
Before you buy
Liquids: checked baggage. Also check whether your home country restricts any of the actives.

Wine, direct from producers ×2–4

Estimate
Why it is cheaper
Producer-direct sales without excise duty, freight or importer margin — and access to bottles that are never allocated for export at all.
Where to buy
Domaines in the regions. City wine shops are already priced against the export market.
Before you buy
Duty-free allowances at home cap this hard — around three bottles for most destinations. Buying a case means paying duty.

Common questions

Is French luxury actually cheaper in Paris than in Tokyo?

Yes, typically 1.3–1.6× cheaper once the VAT refund is applied, because Japanese retail carries import duty, an importer margin and a premium positioning on top of the home-boutique price. The ratio is modest but the absolute saving on a high-ticket item is large. Note that stock and model availability differ, so you may not find the exact reference you want.

Where do I get my VAT refund validated?

At your final point of departure from the EU, which is not necessarily France. If you fly Paris to Frankfurt to Tokyo, you validate in Frankfurt. Allow extra time at the airport, keep the goods accessible and unused, and complete the validation before checking your bags if the items are going in the hold.
